Why Is Manipur Burning Again?

Manipur conflict is rooted in decades-old ethnic tensions between the Meitei (mostly Hindu) and the Kuki-Zo tribes (mostly Christian). The situation worsened in May 2023, when the Meiteis demanded Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, which the Kuki-Zo tribes strongly opposed, fearing loss of their land rights and government benefits.

Since then, over 250 people have been killed and more than 60,000 displaced, making it one of India’s worst internal conflicts in recent years.

May 2023: In a harrowing incident that has shocked the nation, two women from the Kuki-Zo community were paraded naked and allegedly gang-raped by a mob in Manipur. This atrocity, which occurred in May 2023, came to light after a distressing video surfaced online, leading to widespread outrage and condemnation.

September 2024: In Jiribam district, six individuals were killed in gun violence between Meitei and Kuki groups. In Sekmai, a mob allegedly beat a Kuki man to death, while Meitei armed groups attacked a Central Reserve Police Force camp and nearby homes, resulting in the death of a woman. 

November 2024: A 31-year-old Kuki woman was found burned to death in Jiribam district, an area previously untouched by the conflict. This incident led to a series of retaliatory attacks, including the killing of 10 armed Kuki men by security forces after they attempted to attack a police station. The discovery of the bodies of a Meitei family of six in a river further fueled tensions, leading to widespread protests and unrest in the state capital, Imphal . 

Manipur Under President’s Rule: What It Means

With President’s Rule in Manipur, the state’s elected government is dissolved, and the central government takes full control. A governor appointed by New Delhi will now handle law and order.
