In a heart-wrenching tragedy, a massive stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on the night of February 15, 2025, claimed the lives of at least 18 individuals, including 14 women and four children. The catastrophic incident unfolded around 10 PM as an overwhelming crowd of devotees gathered to board trains bound for the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

The Chaotic Unfolding

Eyewitnesses recount scenes of utter chaos and despair. Dharmendra Singh, a passenger en route to Prayagraj, described the station as "overcrowded" beyond anything he had ever witnessed. He recounted seeing "six or seven women taken away on stretchers" right before his eyes.

The turmoil escalated when an announcement mistakenly directed passengers from Platform 12 to Platform 16, leading to a frantic rush. A porter, who has worked at the station since 1981, lamented, "I have never seen such a massive crowd... people started colliding and fell on the escalator and stairs."

The Grim Toll

The stampede resulted in the tragic loss of 18 lives, with victims including 14 women and four children. Over a dozen others sustained injuries and were rushed to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narain Hospital for urgent medical attention.

Underlying Causes

Preliminary investigations suggest that a combination of factors led to the disaster:

• Overcrowding: The station was inundated with pilgrims heading to the Maha Kumbh Mela, leading to unmanageable crowds on platforms 14 and 15.

• Train Delays: Delays of the Swatantrata Senani Express and Bhubaneshwar Rajdhani trains exacerbated the congestion, as passengers awaited departures on already crowded platforms.

• Mismanagement: Blocked staircases intended to control the crowd inadvertently led to bottlenecks. The sudden platform change announcement further fueled panic, causing a deadly surge.

Government Response

In the aftermath, the Indian Railways announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹10 lakh to the families of the deceased, ₹2.5 lakh for those seriously injured, and ₹1 lakh for individuals with minor injuries.

A high-level, two-member committee has been constituted to investigate the incident thoroughly. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw expressed deep sorrow, stating, "The entire team is working to assist all those who have been affected by this tragic incident."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his distress over the tragedy, offering condolences to the bereaved families and wishing a swift recovery for the injured.
