Chatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj: The Warrior Prince Who Defied the Mughals

The Untold Story of Sambhaji Maharaj’s Life, Struggles, and Heroic Death

Introduction

Sambhaji Maharaj, the valiant son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, remains one of the most misunderstood yet heroic figures in Indian history. Despite his incredible bravery, strategic mind, and unyielding spirit, his story has often been overshadowed by his father’s legacy. The recent Marathi movie “Chhaava” has reignited interest in his life, bringing his struggles and sacrifice into the spotlight.

But who was Sambhaji Maharaj, and how did he meet his tragic yet heroic end? Let’s explore his life from childhood to his legendary resistance against the Mughal Empire.

The Birth of a Warrior (1657-1674)

Born on May 14, 1657, in Purandar Fort, Sambhaji was raised amidst constant battles and political intrigue. His father, Shivaji Maharaj, ensured he was trained in warfare, diplomacy, and statecraft from a young age.

However, Sambhaji’s childhood was not easy. At just 9 years old, he was sent as a political hostage to the Mughal court of Aurangzeb as part of a temporary treaty. Even in captivity, he observed the Mughal strategies, a knowledge he would later use to challenge them.

Sambhaji’s Rise to Power & Struggles (1674-1681)

After Shivaji Maharaj’s death in 1680, Sambhaji faced betrayal from his own relatives. His stepmother, Soyarabai, wanted her son Rajaram to be king. However, Sambhaji outmaneuvered the plot and rightfully claimed the throne in 1681.

His rule was marked by constant battles:

  • He fought back Aurangzeb’s massive Mughal army, which was determined to crush the Maratha empire.
  • He resisted the Portuguese in Goa and the British in Bombay.
  • He built a naval force to protect Maratha trade routes.

Despite facing internal betrayals, Sambhaji never surrendered.

The Most Famous Incident: The Mughal Capture (1689)

One of the most defining moments of his life was his capture by Aurangzeb in 1689. Betrayed by his own men, he was caught near Sangameshwar.

Aurangzeb gave him a choice:

  1. Convert to Islam and live as a Mughal noble.
  2. Face brutal torture and death

Sambhaji refused to bow down. He proudly declared, “I would rather die a Maratha than live as a Mughal.”

For over 40 days, he endured inhuman torture—his eyes were gouged, his tongue was cut, and he was subjected to unimaginable pain. Yet, he never accepted defeat.

On March 11, 1689, Aurangzeb finally ordered his execution. Sambhaji Maharaj was brutally killed but became immortal in history as a true warrior.

Sambhaji’s Legacy & the Movie “Chhaava”

Despite his tragic death, Sambhaji’s sacrifice ignited a fire in the hearts of the Marathas. His younger brother, Rajaram, continued the fight, and the Marathas ultimately defeated the Mughals in later years.

The recent Marathi movie “Chhaava”, directed by Nagraj Manjule, brings his heroic journey to the big screen, ensuring that his legacy lives on.

Conclusion: The Lion Who Never Bowed

Sambhaji Maharaj’s life was filled with struggles, betrayals, and fierce battles, but he never gave up. His unwavering courage against the mighty Mughal Empire makes him one of the greatest warriors in Indian history.

His story is a reminder that true heroes never surrender—even in the face of death.
